How to Reduce Tantrums by Teaching Communication
If your child is experiencing frequent tantrums, it can feel overwhelming and isolating. You are not alone, and there is a simple reason why many of these outbursts occur: Your child is trying to communicate, but they don't yet have the tools to be heard.
At Connected Kids, our approach to ABA therapy in the Merrimack Valley and Southern NH focuses on giving children those tools, turning frustration into connection. Here is a three-step guide to help reduce tantrums by prioritizing communication.
Step 1: Identify the "Why" Behind the Behavior
Before we can teach a new skill, we have to understand what the tantrum is trying to say. Generally, a child is trying to achieve one of three things:
Access: They want a specific toy, snack, or activity.
Avoidance: They are trying to get out of a task, like cleaning up or a difficult transition.
Attention: They are seeking interaction with a caregiver or peer.
Step 2: Teach a Better Way to Ask
Once you know the reason, you can replace the tantrum with a functional communication tool. Depending on your child’s current developmental level, this might look like:
Simple Words: Teaching "help," "more," or the name of a desired item.
Gestures: Encouraging pointing or reaching as a clear signal of intent.
Visuals: Using picture communication systems to help your child "show" you what they need.
Step 3: Respond and Reinforce Immediately
The key to making these new tools stick is consistency and speed. When your child uses their new communication skill:
Honor the Request: Whenever appropriate, give them what they asked for immediately.
Stay Positive: Use plenty of encouragement to show them that using their words (or signs) is much more effective than a tantrum.
Respond Quickly: This reinforces the "cause and effect" link between communication and getting their needs met.
Step 4: Stay consistent
Consistency is what turns communication into a habit.
